Engine Displacement Calculator (cc and Litres)
Short answer
Displacement is π ÷ 4 × bore² × stroke × number of cylinders. With bore and stroke in centimetres the answer is in cubic centimetres; divide by 1,000 for litres. A four-cylinder engine with an 86 mm bore and 86 mm stroke displaces about 1,998 cc, or 2.0 L.
- Displacement
- 1,998 cc
- Litres
- 2 L
Formula
Displacement (cc) = π ÷ 4 × (Bore cm)² × Stroke cm × Cylinders
Worked example
π ÷ 4 × 8.6² × 8.6 = 499.6 cc per cylinder; × 4 = 1,998 cc ≈ 2.0 L.
Before you rely on it
- Manufacturers round displacement, so a calculated 1,998 cc engine is sold as a 2.0 L.
