How to get certified
- 1
Register as an apprentice with your provincial or territorial authority
Apprenticeship is run by each province and territory. In Ontario the trade is Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (313A), administered by Skilled Trades Ontario. It is a compulsory trade there, so you must hold the required registration or certification to work in it.
- 2
Complete your on-the-job hours and technical training
Log your work-based hours with your employer and complete each level of in-school training. Ontario sets 8,280 hours on the job and 720 hours in school (three levels) for 313A, about five years in total. Other jurisdictions set their own requirements.
- 3
Get your refrigerant handling certification
Handling refrigerants is regulated separately from trade certification. In Ontario you need an Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) certificate card to purchase and handle refrigerants; the course is one day and you need 75% to pass. Other provinces and territories have their own environmental rules, so check where you work.
- 4
Or apply as a trade qualifier / challenger
Experienced workers who never registered as apprentices can usually apply to challenge the exam by documenting their trade experience. Each authority sets its own hour thresholds and evidence rules, so check before you apply.
- 5
Get approved and write the exam
Once your authority confirms you are eligible, it tells you how and where to write. Expect 125 multiple-choice questions and up to 4 hours, with 70% needed to pass. A formula sheet and acronym list are supplied at the exam.
- 6
Receive your certificate with the Red Seal endorsement
In Ontario, Skilled Trades Ontario issues a Certificate of Qualification when you pass the certifying exam. A pass on the interprovincial exam brings the Red Seal endorsement, which is recognized across participating provinces and territories.
How to study
- Study by the official weightings: installation (26 questions) and maintenance and service (28 questions) together make up more than 40% of the exam.
- Control systems appear in four tasks (C-8, D-10, E-12 and F-15) totalling 34 questions, so practise ladder diagrams, thermostat wiring, motor and capacitor checks, and pressure controls.
- Practise superheat, subcooling and compression ratio calculations until they are automatic, always converting gauge pressure to absolute where a ratio is needed.
- Learn to diagnose from a set of readings: work out what high or low suction pressure, head pressure, superheat and subcooling together point to.
- Take timed practice sets: 125 questions in 4 hours is just under 2 minutes per question, so skip and return to long calculations rather than stalling.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the Red Seal Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic exam?
Red Seal lists 125 multiple-choice questions for this trade, split across six major work activities: 13 common occupational skills, 19 routine trade activities, 18 planning installation, 26 performing installation, 21 commissioning, and 28 maintenance and service.
How many correct answers do I need to pass?
The Red Seal pass mark is 70%. On a 125-question exam that means at least 88 correct answers, since 87 would be 69.6%. Every question has equal value. Your provincial or territorial authority reports your result.
How long do I get to write it?
Red Seal states a maximum of 4 hours for its exams. Ask your apprenticeship authority about accommodations if you need them, because those are arranged locally.
Is 313A the same as the Red Seal Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic trade?
Yes. Ontario calls the trade Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (313A); it is part of the Red Seal Program. It is compulsory in Ontario, and Skilled Trades Ontario issues the Certificate of Qualification after you pass the certifying exam.
Do I also need a refrigerant handling card such as the ODP card?
Usually, yes, but it is separate from your trade certificate. In Ontario you need an Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) certificate card to purchase and handle refrigerants. Training is a one-day course offered through HRAI and its partners, you need 75% to pass, and the card is valid for 5 years. Ontario notes the ODP card alone does not let you work on refrigeration equipment; the trade still requires a Certificate of Qualification. Other provinces and territories have their own rules.
What kinds of questions are on the exam?
Red Seal says 20-30% of the questions test knowledge and recall, 50-60% test procedures and application, and 10-20% test critical thinking. Expect calculation and troubleshooting questions where you must interpret pressures, temperatures and electrical readings.
Is a formula sheet provided?
Yes. Red Seal supplies a formula sheet, covering unit abbreviations, conversion factors, constants and general, thermal, area and volume formulas, along with an acronym list at the exam. You still need to know how to apply the formulas quickly. Pressure-temperature data is not something to memorize for our practice items; we give it in the question.
Which codes and standards should I study?
Many refrigeration safety requirements, such as machinery room and refrigerant quantity rules, come from CSA B52, the Mechanical Refrigeration Code, alongside electrical and environmental regulations. The Red Seal trade page also notes that a newer occupational standard has been published and that exams based on it are still being developed, so check the current exam breakdown and ask your authority which code editions apply before you buy books.
Are these practice questions from the real exam?
No. VoltExam's questions are original items written to practise the topics in the official exam breakdown. They are not official Red Seal questions, and doing well on them does not guarantee a pass.
