How to get certified
- 1
Register as an apprentice with your provincial or territorial authority
Apprenticeship is run by each province and territory (in Ontario, Skilled Trades Ontario). Work hours, in-school levels and fees differ by jurisdiction, so confirm the requirements where you work. In Ontario, Industrial Mechanic Millwright is a non-compulsory trade, but it has a certifying exam that leads to a Certificate of Qualification.
- 2
Complete your on-the-job hours and technical training
Log your work-based hours with your employer and complete each level of in-school training. Skilled Trades Ontario lists a typical 8,000 hours for this trade: 7,280 hours of work experience and 720 hours of training across three levels.
- 3
Or apply as a trade qualifier / challenger
Experienced millwrights who never registered as apprentices can usually apply to challenge the exam by documenting their trade experience. Each authority sets its own hour thresholds and evidence rules, so check before you apply.
- 4
Get approved and book the exam
Once your authority confirms you are eligible, it tells you how and where to write the interprovincial exam. Use the occupational standard, the official exam breakdown, the Red Seal sample questions and the self-assessment tool to plan your study.
- 5
Write the exam
Expect 135 multiple-choice questions and up to 4 hours. A formula sheet is provided, and you need 70% to pass. If you are unsuccessful, your province or territory sets the number of attempts and waiting periods, and Red Seal requires an approved course of study before a third or later attempt.
- 6
Receive your certificate with the Red Seal endorsement
Passing the interprovincial exam, along with meeting your jurisdiction's other requirements, leads to a certificate of qualification bearing the Red Seal endorsement, which is recognized across participating provinces and territories.
How to study
- Study by the official weightings: power transmission (32 questions) and common occupational skills (25) make up more than 40% of the 135 questions, and material handling and process systems add another 24.
- Know the single biggest tasks: hydraulic systems (12) and preventative and predictive maintenance (11) each carry more questions than any other task on the breakdown.
- Make alignment math automatic: rim readings give twice the offset, face readings give slope over the swing diameter, and foot corrections come from offset plus slope times distance. Practise both rim-and-face and reverse dial.
- Drill the ratios and formulas: sheave and gear speed ratios, sling leg tension, load weight from steel volume, pump affinity laws, force = pressure × area and cylinder speed = flow ÷ area, all in metric units.
- Take timed practice sets: 135 questions in 4 hours is about 1 minute 45 seconds per question, so mark long calculation questions and come back to them.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the Red Seal Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) exam?
The Red Seal Program lists 135 questions for this trade, all multiple choice. They are split across six major work activities: 25 common occupational skills, 17 rigging, hoisting/lifting and moving, 32 mechanical power transmission, 24 material handling and process systems, 21 fluid power, and 16 preventative and predictive maintenance, commissioning and decommissioning.
How many correct answers do I need to pass?
The Red Seal pass mark is 70%. On a 135-question exam that means at least 95 correct answers, because 94 correct is just under 70%. Your provincial or territorial authority reports your result.
How long do I get to write it?
Red Seal states a maximum of 4 hours for its exams. Ask your apprenticeship authority about accommodations if you need them, because those are arranged locally.
Is 433A the same as the Red Seal Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) trade?
Yes. 433A is the code Skilled Trades Ontario uses on its Industrial Mechanic Millwright training documents, and it lists the trade as part of the Interprovincial Red Seal Program under the title Industrial Mechanic (Millwright). In Ontario, passing the certifying exam leads to a Certificate of Qualification from Skilled Trades Ontario.
Do I need a certificate to work as a millwright in Ontario?
Skilled Trades Ontario lists the trade as non-compulsory, so certification is voluntary there. Many employers still look for the Certificate of Qualification with the Red Seal endorsement, and other provinces may have different rules, so check with the authority where you work.
What kinds of questions are on the exam?
Every question is multiple choice with four options and one correct answer. Red Seal's breakdown for this trade says 30–40% are knowledge and recall, 40–50% procedural and application, and 20–30% critical thinking. Some questions need formulas, and Red Seal provides a formula sheet during the exam.
Which occupational standard is the exam based on?
Red Seal notes that a newer occupational standard has been published for this trade and that exams based on it are still under development. Current exams are based on the previous standard, which is the one the published exam breakdown and its task numbers follow.
Can I rewrite the exam if I fail?
Yes, but the number of attempts and the waiting period between them are set by each province and territory. Red Seal also requires you to complete an approved course of study before your third and every later attempt.
Are these practice questions from the real exam?
No. VoltExam's questions are original items written to practise the topics in the official exam breakdown. They are not official Red Seal questions, and doing well on them does not ensure a pass. Always follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions for specifications and tolerances.
